Now that the weather has turned nicer I'm finding myself craving some new gear for walking, running, playing tennis with the hubs and riding bikes with the kiddos. I'm doing 2 runs this summer - one for Prostate Cancer in June and a Mud-run Obstacle course in August - so I try and "train" a bit for each one.
As a plus-size woman, one of the things that is most difficult about working out or exercising is that other people generally end up seeing you while you do it. And personally - a major confidence booster (when I know I'm going to be out all red-faced and sweaty) is at least wearing some cute gear while I'm at it. And this year there is no shortage of awesome prints and silhouettes in plus-sized workout gear.

I also recommend two things:
1) Go to a proper shoe store or outdoor sports store or Running Room and talk to someone who legitimately knows their stuff about what shoe is best for you. The best running shoes/cross-trainers/hiking boots/etc etc will be the ones that are the right shape for your foot, your needs for support and your manner of exercise. Don't just go and buy the cheapest sneakers from Walmart or Giant Tiger (not that there's anything wrong with those, but they won't be very supportive when it comes to actual exercise). It's important to wear the right shoes not only to take care of your feet, but your ankles, knees, hips and back will thank you as well.
2) Get a good sports bra (or 2 or 3). Find out your actual size and order appropriately. Pro-tip? A good sports bra will not cost you $20. I know not all plus-sized women are busty like me, but whether you're big or small the muscles supporting your breasts when you exercise need to be taken good care of. Unless you're really totally into saggy-boobs and back pain. I mean, if so - do your thing.
If you're an "unconventional size" (even though I hate hate HATE that terminology) I recommend looking into a reputable online retailer that will let you ship things back to them if they do not fit properly. My personal favourite is Butterfly Collection out of British Columbia. The owner, Claire is amazing - all the staff are awesome and their bras are not only beautiful, but fairly priced. Also - they'll do a web-cam fitting (which sounds weird, I know but is actually super-helpful).
Okay - enough ranting and drooling over workout gear - I think it's time to get out there and actually do something!
