About

Thank you for visiting What Mama Wears!

My name is Tea (like the drink - also - obviously not my REAL name) and I thought I would take a little bit of time to answer some common questions and to tell you why I started this blog in the first place!

What Mama Wears came about as part of my other blog Talk & Tea Leaves. While I still post at T&TL occasionally, I decided that WMW needed it's own home. I post a couple of times per week (but not on weekends) and it's either an outfit post, or a guest post about Mom fashion, makeup, skincare, etc. I am a huge proponent of loving and dressing the body you have, not the body you wish you had.

I am a plus-sized woman. A mom. A Canadian. My clothing budget is minimal at best. And while I wish I could shop at topshop, J. Crew, Madewell, ASOS and so on and so on.... my shopping leans much more heavily towards Value Village, Salvation Army, Giant Tiger, Walmart & Target. Because, I think - that's real life. Most women don't have several hundred dollars per month to spend on clothes. Most women can't spend all their time buying clothes online, or shopping in high-end fashion malls. And most Moms don't have more than about 10 minutes to put an "outfit" together in the morning when you're busy making and packing school lunches, getting ready for work/your day, getting kids fed and out the door. So that's what What Mama Wears is about.

Yes, it would be much simpler to wear yoga pants or sweats and a t-shirt every day - but just because I'm a Mom doesn't mean I don't want to look nice.
On the other hand - you're not going to see this Mama going "grocery shopping" while wearing platform stiletto heels - I mean, honestly.

Common questions:

How do you put your outfits together?
Two things that I find are extremely important to my outfits: 1) that it makes me feel good. Comfortable, fits well, made of fabrics that don't pick or scratch, and cuts that don't cut off circulation or poke or prod me throughout the day and 2)That work for my life.

Like I said earlier - it's not very realistic for me to wear giant heels on a regular basis - I walk my kids to and from school most days, I do a lot of running errands, volunteering at my church and cleaning my house throughout the day - flats are definitely my friend. Also - I'm 5'9" - if I wear heels, I tower over most other people in my life.
As to actually putting the outfit together? I tend to have an idea of at least 3-5 things I can wear any given item with - I usually pick the 2 that are currently clean.

Who takes your photos?
Mostly the timer on my camera does. Occasionally I'll have a friend or my husband who I can badger into taking my pictures, but it's not as common as me setting up the camera, setting the timer and just letting it go!

Do you photoshop your pictures?
Okay - I know this is controversial - but yes I do. HOWEVER - I will tell you what I photoshop. I vanity shop out a mole that is on my forehead - apparently no one notices it but me, but I shop it out anyways because it drives me crazy. I also vanity shop out a crease in my forehead that seems to catch the light of my flash like it's its job - it usually reads as a giant white line on my forehead, lol. The other thing I have to regularly shop out of my pictures? Kids hands, feet, dog tail, dog butt. And the MOST common thing I photoshop out? Fluff on my carpet. Seriously. I think I need to vacuum more. Oy.

Do you accept sponsored posts?
I have never had a sponsored post (yet - as of 07/10/2014) but I would consider it depending on what the item is. Sponsored posts would be amazing for me - as mentioned my budget is basically zero. That said - I don't want to change the tone of this blog. So... yeah - if salvation army , or a thrift store, or a secondhand clothing seller wanted to sponsor me - awesome. But if a big name seller wanted to sponsor a post - I'd have to seriously consider where I was going with that kind of interaction. I want to remain genuine to my readers, that comes first.

What are affiliate links?
Affiliate links are when if you click a link and make a purchase I will make a bit of a commission off of your purchase. I will ALWAYS note if something is an affiliate link. For the most part the "similar" items I link at the end of each post are NOT affiliate links. Currently the only active affiliate link I have is on my sidebar and it's for Kiyonna (whom I think are amazing, but more expensive... although worth it). Again - if I post an affiliate link I will always always always note that for you, so you can decide whether you'd like to support me via affiliate link or not. It's your choice.

Do you have a day job?
Yes! I am a presenter for a company that brings science workshops into grade schools. It's an awesome job (and just about the closest to rock star status I'm going to get) and it shows kids that science is not only part of everything around them, but that it can be fun and interesting too.
Also, I do have a small home business of cakes with my younger sister - and if you're interested, you can check it out here: Candy Girls Cake Co.

Can we contact you?
Sure! If you want to contact me, you can always do so using the contact form at the side of the blog page, or you can comment on any given post - OR you can email me directly at
