Wear Plaid for Dad

Today I'm wearing Plaid for my Dad.

A couple of years ago I had to hear my mother say possibly the scariest thing I've ever heard: "Dad has cancer." Even now, thinking about her saying that is utterly terrifying to me. Cancer. The "C" word. So scary, so daunting.

When my Dad was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer he didn't curl up in a ball and die. He fought. He decided to go for the most radical treatment available: a full prostate-ectomy. And I am beyond thankful to be able to say that he is a Cancer Survivor. He's still with us, making us laugh and smile and I can't imagine what our lives would be like without him.

Unfortunately, that's not the case for so many other men. Here in Canada even - where healthcare is free - it's estimated that in 2015:

• 24,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. This represents 24% of all new cancer cases in men in 2015.
• 4,100 men will die from prostate cancer. This represents 10% of all cancer deaths in men in 2015.
• On average, 66 Canadian men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer every day.
• On average, 11 Canadian men will die from prostate cancer every day.

Terrifying. So this year, my sisters and I and one of my good friends are participating in the 5km Do it for Dads Walk Run in order to raise money for Prostate Cancer research. And today - June 19, I'm also participating in Wear Plaid for Dad. A separate fundraiser for Prostate Cancer Canada.

I know that this post isn't really about fashion. It's about my Dad. My "Hey Ol'man". So today, I wear plaid for my Dad. For all Dads. For all men.

Please remind the men in your life that being tested for Prostate cancer can be as simple as a blood test. And it could save a life.
